Since that time, Apple has gone a completely different direction with its laptop line.</p><p>Today, every Mac&#8217;s RAM is soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded, and on most models, even the solid state drive is soldered.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://spareroomtech.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Spare Room Tech! It turns on and works just fine with no component failures or data loss. </p><p>But, as your friendly neighborhood IT guy, I can assure you this: It&#8217;s not an ideal world.</p><p>Every day I work on computers, I&#8217;m reminded just how fragile they can be. Parts fail - sometimes at random. Accidents happen. Liquid gets spilled. Humidity damages parts.</p><p>And when that happens, a repair is needed.</p><p>For most parts, all that&#8217;s needed - outside of warranty service where available - is to order the appropriate part, get it installed, and move on with our lives. But where parts are soldered to the board, there&#8217;s not much to do.</p><p>Not much that <em>can</em> be done, that is.</p><p>I&#8217;ve seen solid state drives fail - sometimes suddenly and sometimes gradually. In most systems, when one fails, it&#8217;s stupidly simple to take out the old drive, put in a new drive, reinstall the OS and be back up and running before lunchtime.</p><p>But on a Mac with a soldered drive, if that thing fails&#8230; the machine is toast.</p><p>Game over.</p><h2>&#8220;Ok, sure. But that&#8217;s rare, right?&#8221;</h2><p>In ideal circumstances? Sure. But circumstances are often not ideal. Working in the industry long enough, I&#8217;ve seen all types of accidents and damage to machines. Electrical overloads, sprinklers soaking an office, a wayward coffee cup&#8230; It happens.</p><p>I&#8217;ve seen enough to be extra careful anytime I have my own laptop near food or a drink or anything else that could damage it.</p><p>Rare means impossible until it happens to you.</p><p>I&#8217;ve had the unfortunate job of telling clients there&#8217;s no way for me to recover their priceless data after a logic board failure. It sucks.</p><p>They didn&#8217;t think it would happen either. Until it did.</p><p>And the sucky thing is even with backups, it&#8217;s still possible to lose data. Unless that backup has everything you were working on up until the time the drive failed&#8230; some data will be lost.</p><p>Apple likes to claim this design makes their machines more reliable. But that doesn&#8217;t mean much to someone whose data is permanently lost because something on the logic board is fried and we can&#8217;t pull the drive.</p><h2>Why do I accept it?</h2><p>Apple&#8217;s OS - macOS - is frustrating in a long list of ways, but in others it&#8217;s far superior to Windows. And in fact, if I could dump Windows entirely, I probably would.</p><p>Unfortunately, Apple doesn&#8217;t make a laptop that has upgradable storage anymore. Those days are gone, and that ship has sailed.</p><p>Arguably, they could do it if they wanted to - as evidenced by the Mac Studio&#8217;s non-soldered storage - but I don&#8217;t think they want to. Apple knows that soldered storage means forcing users to pay more up front for storage they don&#8217;t need at the time. And that means more money for Apple.</p><p>At the end of the day, I think the only reason I accept it is simple: In order to get macOS in a laptop - which I do want - I don&#8217;t have a choice.</p><p>Will this change in the future? Will the EU put pressure on Apple to bring back non-soldered storage across the board?</p><p>I doubt it.</p><p>But I sure do hope so.</p><h2>What can I do?</h2><p>If the SSD fails, not much - without AppleCare, that is. Knowing that the SSD of the Mac is soldered to the board does impact my usage habits a bit, honestly. I don&#8217;t watch it like a hawk, but I do keep an eye on the wear level of the drive and try to avoid doing anything that would cause extreme levels of wear - like needlessly writing lots and lots of data to the drive.</p><p>Realistically, I know the drive should last for a good long time - should - but in practice, I know that components can fail with or without warning at any time. So for me, the name of the game is backups and off-site storage. </p><p>All of my data - that is, all of my important data - is stored in a location where I can get to it easily in the event of a catastrophic failure - whether that&#8217;s caused by a hardware fault or my own clumsiness with a snack.</p><p>In practice, most people don&#8217;t need to worry about this of course. And perhaps I worry about it too much.</p><p>But I do sure hope for it to change one day.</p><p>Not that it will.</p><p>But I can hope, right?</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://spareroomtech.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Spare Room Tech! But it&#8217;s lacking in the privacy department. Image source: <a href="https://www.notion.so/product">Notion</a></figcaption></figure></div><p>Notion is objectively cool, and probably one of the best note taking tools on the market - especially for the zero dollar price tag. But it&#8217;s lacking in the privacy department.</p><p>Sadly.</p><p>So despite my frustrations with Obsidian, <a href="https://medium.com/@michaelswengel/i-just-cant-switch-sticking-with-obsidian-over-notion-c9a70a4a371d?sk=4c2086a13e28e78e1336d7995f2ada0e">I just can&#8217;t convince myself to switch back to Notion</a>.</p><h2>Paying to fix <s>Obsidian</s> Apple</h2><p>Obsidian itself isn&#8217;t broken, but it&#8217;s implementation on iOS has been for me. You see, I&#8217;ve been using iCloud to sync my notes between my iPhone, iPad, MacBook and Windows computers, but that&#8217;s been one of my most frustrating experiences with technology in recent years.</p><p>Notes would usually sync correctly but occasionally fail to update on other devices. And sometimes iCloud on Windows would stop syncing completely and even need to be reinstalled.</p><p>Ideally, I&#8217;d prefer to use a different storage location - even if that&#8217;s just DropBox - but Obsidian on iOS is limited to using either:</p><ol><li><p>iCloud, or</p></li><li><p>Obsidian Sync.</p></li></ol><p>Why? Because Apple.</p><p>iCloud would be fine if I were using only Apple devices. Syncing between my Mac, iPhone and iPad only worked. But adding in my Windows devices? Less than ideal. And I don&#8217;t want to be limited to accessing my notes only on macOS or on Windows. </p><p>Obsidian Sync, though interesting, isn&#8217;t free.</p><p>And I&#8217;m cheap.</p><p>This <a href="https://medium.com/@michaelswengel/obsidian-is-frustrating-me-so-much-4bb43e222648?sk=3a509482f1b8a8504d3d0aa184bdd9e5">frustrating dilemma</a> led me to a fork in the road: do I pay for Obsidian Sync or go back to Notion?</p><p>Is paying to fix my frustration worth it?</p><h2>Privacy and dollar signs</h2><p>Initially, I wanted to say no. Paying wouldn&#8217;t be worth it, I thought. But just how much is being able to control my own data worth?</p><p>Obsidian lets me choose where to store my notes and keep them backed up at will. Notion doesn&#8217;t. </p><p>Notion is free and syncs across devices effortlessly. Obsidian is also free, but the best way to sync across devices - at least my combination of devices - isn&#8217;t.</p><p>Is the completely free option worth the potential privacy issues? Or is it better to pay a few bucks per month to have the assurance that my notes are kept private?</p><p>It&#8217;s a tough call.</p><p>But eventually <a href="https://medium.com/@michaelswengel/i-just-cant-switch-sticking-with-obsidian-over-notion-c9a70a4a371d?sk=4c2086a13e28e78e1336d7995f2ada0e">I landed on the side of Obsidian Sync</a>. </p><p>No, I don&#8217;t <em>really</em> want another subscription.</p><p>No, I don&#8217;t <em>really</em> want to pay for something another app can do for free.</p><p>But when I remember that Obsidian affords me privacy options that Notion doesn&#8217;t, it seems worth it to me.</p><p></p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://spareroomtech.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Spare Room Tech! Source: <a href="https://www.apple.com/mac-mini/">Apple</a></figcaption></figure></div><p>The desktop computer market has always been a source of fascination for me. Since the days of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups and DOS, I&#8217;ve studied and loved learning about all the interconnected parts of a desktop computer. </p><p>When I first saw what we now call small form factor computers, I was amazed. Then, when Apple launched the Mac Mini in 2005, I was intrigued. No, the Mac Mini wasn&#8217;t the first small form factor computer, but it&#8217;s the one that had my attention. And I was fascinated.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://spareroomtech.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Spare Room Tech! Not everyone, mind you. But for many, the Mac mini is exactly the right choice.</p><p>Here&#8217;s why I think that.</p><h2>The perfect form factor and design</h2><p>For those who need to get things done but don&#8217;t want a big, bulky box taking up a huge chunk of space on their desks or on the floor nearby, a small form factor computer is an ideal choice.</p><p>These machines are just a few inches wide, tall and deep and don&#8217;t take up much room - which is perfect for making sure it doesn&#8217;t take up desk space you might need for school, work or anything else.</p><p>HP, Lenovo and Dell have since caught on and now offer their own small desktop computers, designed to be tiny additions to your local desk without sacrificing much - if any - computing power.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png" width="1456" height="1470" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1470,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:468446,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!p4BV!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F21de3def-1362-47ee-adac-568e444768e6_1468x1482.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Ports of the Mac mini. Source: <a href="https://www.apple.com/mac-mini/specs/">Apple</a></figcaption></figure></div><p>My 14-inch MacBook Pro, for example, isn&#8217;t huge. But it does take up space on my desk, even docked. A Mac mini can fit neatly under a monitor stand or even mounted under the desk, with the proper support.</p><p>While there are certainly advantages to larger systems - like expandability and room for more powerful components - most people won&#8217;t need or care about those advantages. For them, a small system that doesn&#8217;t get loud or take up much space is ideal.</p><h2>Enough power for professionals</h2><p>More importantly for most of us, the Mac mini packs a punch. In years past, the Mac mini was designed to be a budget, low-end Mac that was meant for casual users who wouldn&#8217;t need much power - like those who needed something simple for typing homework assignments or just browsing the web.</p><p>Today, powered by Apple silicon, that&#8217;s no longer the case. With the launch of the M2 Mac mini, Apple surprised us with an optional M2 Pro chip. Now, the Mac mini can be equipped with the same powerful processor inside several of Apple&#8217;s professional computers - including the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.</p><p>As never before, the Mac mini is a great option for those who need to edit video, create music, prepare photos in Lightroom and more - all while taking up a small area of the desk unlike a large desktop computer or even a laptop.</p><h2>Simple enough for everyone else</h2><p>For non-professionals though, the Mac mini still reigns supreme is a basic device. It doesn&#8217;t take much setup or knowhow. Plug in the power cord a monitor and and maybe a USB mouse and keyboard if you want - and you&#8217;re ready to go.</p><p>Think about how most home users use their computers. Most aren&#8217;t going to run high intensity design software or train AI models or the like. They just want something that will work and be reliable.</p><p>For all of its flaws and annoyances, macOS does that very well. And as a compact, simple desktop computer, the Mac mini fits the bill. Plug it in, push the button and you&#8217;re up and running.</p><p>Unlike a Windows computer, there&#8217;s no waiting for drivers to install or closing wave after wave of preinstalled bloatware.</p><h2>The start of its own ecosystem</h2><p>One of my favorite things about the Mac mini is everything that <em>doesn&#8217;t</em> come with it. The iMac - a great computer - comes with a keyboard and mouse. And that screen, while gorgeous, isn&#8217;t something you can detach and set aside. You&#8217;re stuck with it.</p><p>Apple makes some great accessories, of course (with the exception of the Magic Mouse which is the product of a board meeting from Hell, it seems.) I do love the Magic Keyboard with TouchID built in. But what if I don&#8217;t want to use that? Or what if I already have one?</p><p>If I buy an iMac, I get a keyboard and mouse with it. But what if I already have a keyboard, mouse and monitor I want to use? I&#8217;m happy with my MX Keys Mini and MX Master 3S mouse and don&#8217;t want to replace them.</p><p>If I bought an iMac, the accessories would just be taking up space in my office. And of course you know those accessories are factored into the purchase price of the iMac. So I&#8217;d be paying good money for something I wouldn&#8217;t use. </p><p>Pointless, right?</p><p>The iMac has a beautiful screen, but at 24-inches, it&#8217;s a bit small for many of us. I prefer a larger display.</p><p>A Mac mini, on the other hand, doesn&#8217;t come with anything extra. Buyers are expected to provide a mouse and keyboard and monitor. Those peripherals can be as fancy and expensive or as basic and cheap as I want. And one monitor? Two monitors? I get to decide. I&#8217;m not paying for any extra parts and accessories I won&#8217;t use.</p><h2>An affordable Mac</h2><p>Apple sells some expensive systems - eyewateringly expensive. But the Mac mini starts at just $599. Yes, there are cheaper computers out there, but $599 is reasonable for a desktop computer.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png" width="1456" height="869" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:869,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:365584,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!HzBL!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F4fe2c7d7-7ee7-4fde-897a-0a23c5dcb8c4_2120x1266.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Pricing of the M2 family Mac mini. For an additional $200, you can have 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage - putting you in the neighborhood of $999.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png" width="1456" height="1227" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1227,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:364727,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!nz80!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1fc0d2e-be26-48be-a5c0-12e4ec77db8f_1984x1672.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Upgrade options for the base Mac mini. However, it absolutely <em>can</em> be the best option for the right kind of use.</p><p>The base models - those without a &#8220;Pro&#8221; chip - are intended for more basic use. Those who don&#8217;t plan to get into much photo or video editing or 3D gaming will find the base Mac mini good enough for lots of things. Do keep RAM in mind, though as these start out with only 8GB of memory. But even a base model can be a powerful machine for lots of tasks. <span class="mention-wrap" data-attrs="{&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Mark Ellis&quot;,&quot;id&quot;:12003388,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;user&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:null,&quot;photo_url&quot;:&quot;https://bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/9efadc68-2dd0-491e-ac11-b573a81e48c8_1843x1229.jpeg&quot;,&quot;uuid&quot;:&quot;6844de6b-324e-4fb0-963e-7accad48cea3&quot;}" data-component-name="MentionToDOM"></span> built his business largely with a base M1 Mac mini. While no Mac mini ships with a Max or Ultra chip, the Pro Apple silicon chips are excellent options for creative professionals. I&#8217;ve loved the M1 Pro chip in my 14-inch MacBook Pro, and even in 2024, it chews through video editing and everything else I need it to do.</p><p>The mini could be an ideal family computer or home office companion, tackling school work, content creation, office tasks, browsing the web and a bit of gaming - even if not on the same level as a powerful PC with a dedicated GPU.</p><h2>Who shouldn&#8217;t buy a Mac mini?</h2><p>As with most things in the tech world, a Mac mini isn&#8217;t for everyone. And despite the fact that it&#8217;s a strong contender for the desktop computing crown for the average user, there are strong reasons to <em>not</em> pick one up the next time you&#8217;re near your local Apple store or retailer.</p><ol><li><p><strong>The Mac mini runs macOS.</strong> I love macOS and think it&#8217;s a fantastic option for work, school, content creation or just having fun. But it&#8217;s not perfect. For some things, Windows is the far better choice. If you need Windows, a Mac mini is probably not the best option. Yes, you can use Windows in Parallels or a similar tool, but if you&#8217;ll be using Windows primarily, don&#8217;t get a Mac mini. Get something that will run Windows natively.</p></li><li><p><strong>Expandability is important to you.</strong> A standard desktop computer can often be upgraded and repaired with relative ease. A Mac mini can&#8217;t be. Both the memory and storage are soldered to the board, so you can forget about adding more memory or internal storage. And upgrading your processor or GPU? Forget about it.</p></li><li><p><strong>You&#8217;re a high-end gamer.</strong> While Apple silicon <em>can</em> play games, the Mac mini is just not the best machine for gaming. For that, you should look into a system that runs Windows and has a dedicated GPU, fast processor and plenty of RAM. Or, why not build your own?</p></li><li><p><strong>You don&#8217;t want to have to provide all your own peripherals.</strong> I love the fact that the Mac mini is all you get when you buy the Mac mini - but if you&#8217;re looking for an all-in-one setup that&#8217;s crazy easy, an iMac is probably a better bet for you. With an iMac, you&#8217;re getting a nice screen, a keyboard and a mouse. All you need to provide is power, and you&#8217;re up and running.</p></li><li><p><strong>Portability is important to you.</strong> Since the Mac mini is a desktop computer, I expect you&#8217;d get some strange looks trying to carry it around as a laptop. For portability and use on the go - or even just in a different room of the house - a MacBook or other type of laptop will be a better option for you. </p></li></ol><p>Before you rush out and buy one, make sure it <em>will</em> actually fit your needs.</p><h2>The perfect desktop for many people?</h2><p>No computer is perfect for all people everywhere, certainly. But by all accounts, the Mac mini is an excellent option for those who want a reasonably affordable, stationary, customizable macOS experience without all the frills. The mini won&#8217;t replace a gaming desktop anytime soon, and it&#8217;s less than ideal for those who need lots and lots of storage and memory or who like to play AAA games, but for businesses, homes, schools and anyone who wants a solid desktop macOS system, it&#8217;s hard to go wrong with Apple&#8217;s least expensive desktop computer: the Mac mini.</p><p>On the low end of the spectrum, the $599 Mac mini is a great budget option for someone who won&#8217;t need all the specs and power of a higher tier but more expensive machine. And on the high end, the power of a Pro chip makes a properly-specced Mac mini a strong contender for the affordable professional workstation crown.</p><p>Personally, I&#8217;m looking forward to the M3 and M3 Pro Mac mini launch. It&#8217;ll be hard to resist that &#8220;Buy&#8221; button.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://spareroomtech.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Spare Room Tech! But the advice of yesteryear is not quite correct today. And in fact, some of the same reasons I would have given back then for why you should buy a Mac are now <em>bad</em> reasons to buy one today.</p><p>It&#8217;s not that Macs are bad or that the competition is objectively better. They aren&#8217;t. But before you rush out and buy a Mac, make sure it&#8217;s not for one of these bad reasons.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://spareroomtech.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Spare Room Tech! If you want to edit video, you should learn Final Cut. Today, Final Cut remains one of the best video editors on the market, but it does only run on macOS - and now iPadOS. That means that if you want to use Final Cut, you&#8217;re going to need a Mac (or an iPad if you&#8217;re okay using a pared down version of the app.)</p><p>But now, there are <em>lots</em> of fantastic options for video editors. Personally, I love the Adobe Creative Cloud apps. I use Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Illustrator. And for some projects, I&#8217;ll use Affinity Designer - a graphics editor from a company called Serif. All of these programs work on both macOS and on Windows, so I&#8217;m not tied to either OS.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png" width="1456" height="963" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/fe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:963,&quot;width&quot;:1456,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1234107,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:true,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!u_Tm!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ffe75070b-14af-4828-a5a6-1ded73290ea5_2956x1956.png 1456w" sizes="100vw" fetchpriority="high"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Adobe Premiere runs on both macOS and Windows.</figcaption></figure></div><p>Don&#8217;t go buy a Mac just because you&#8217;ll be editing video. Sadly, too many Windows laptops have dim, dull, screens that don&#8217;t reproduce colors well at all.</p><p>Every modern Mac laptop, however, has a color accurate DCI-P3 color gamut screen - even the cheapest, which is the MacBook Air. In the Windows laptop market, you have to dig a bit to find a laptop with a good quality screen. And that includes the display of my Dell XPS 17 9720.</p><p>But, that said, you don&#8217;t need to get a Mac for design work. Today I&#8217;m not so sure that&#8217;s true. Without question, there are PC laptops that are made of plastic, flimsy and probably wouldn&#8217;t outlast a strong breeze. These machines tend to be relatively inexpensive - and so they&#8217;re popular - but they&#8217;re also junk.</p><p>Once you get to the right price point, you find laptops that are made of metal and designed to last for a good long time.</p><p>I work in IT, and I&#8217;ve seen Windows laptops last a good 7, 8, 9 or even more years. Of course a lot depends on the user and how well he takes care of the machine. If a laptop is tossed around in a bag every day and not treated properly, it&#8217;s not going to last as long. Mac or PC. That&#8217;s just common sense.</p><p>But if it&#8217;s treated well, cleaned, and maintained, a Windows laptop can last just as long as a Mac can. I would say gone are the days when I would recommend someone go for the Mac as the best option for a long-lasting machine.</p><p>And yes, there are outliers of course. On either &#8220;side of the aisle&#8221; a Mac or a PC may last for what seems like forever or need to be replaced in just a couple of years.</p><p>That said, in many cases, PC laptops tend to have an upper edge here - especially when repairability and upgradability is considered. A MacBook is more or less soldered together. If you want to upgrade your RAM or storage, forget it. In a Windows laptop, it&#8217;s fairly common and easy to upgrade one or both, potentially breathing new life into an old machine.</p><h2>Which you buy is a matter of preference 97% of the time.</h2><p>The bottom line here is that both Macs and Windows computers are fantastic options for the vast majority of people. Yes, of course, there are use cases that require one over the other. Some applications only work on Windows. Others only work on macOS. But unless you&#8217;re someone who requires those specific programs or a feature unique to either OS, I think you&#8217;ll be happy with either option.</p><p>There are valid reasons for preferring Windows or preferring macOS. They are different operating systems that work differently and offer different advantages and disadvantages. As someone who uses - and <em>likes</em> - both, I think I can say that without coming across too biased hopefully.</p><p>But don&#8217;t let these bad reasons to buy a Mac make you think you absolutely <em>need</em> one - especially if something else might serve you better in the long run.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://spareroomtech.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Spare Room Tech! It&#8217;s hard to believe we&#8217;re already coming up on iOS 18, yet here we are.</p><p>iOS 17 brought us key new features like standby, interactive widgets, live voicemail, PDF editing in Notes, and more.&nbsp;</p><p>According to rumors, iOS 18 is expected to bring major improvements to Siri, and perhaps even the inclusion of generative AI.</p><p>But the biggest, most important potential feature of iOS 18 will be the inclusion of RCS&#8202;&#8212;&#8202;<em>finally</em>. We know that Apple has, at long last, agreed to bring RCS to the iPhone, so it makes sense that we would see its first appearance in iOS 18 in late 2024.</p><h2>iPadOS 18</h2><p>Apple&#8217;s iconic tablet has become the runner to beat in the touch screen computing race. see macOS 15, though it&#8217;s not yet known (externally) what its name will be. My guess is Apple will continue taking names for macOS from California locations as they have done with Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura and Sonoma. &nbsp;</p><p>Unfortunately, Intel Macs are likely nearing the end of the road, and I suspect that in the not too distant future, macOS upgrades will require Apple silicon - or else be extremely limited on Intel machines.</p><h2>WatchOS 11</h2><p>Normally, we&#8217;d expect to see an updated WatchOS, but with things in limbo with the ban of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 because of legal challenges from Masimo, it&#8217;s possible we won&#8217;t see an update to the OS this year.</p><p>Last year we got WatchOS 10, which introduced a new user interface and new features for many of the built in apps.&nbsp;</p><p>Since September of 2015, we&#8217;ve had a new version of WatchOS each September, queuing up WatchOS 11 for September of 2024. But is it possible that major changes and updates to the OS will be postponed until the dispute with Masimo is settled?</p><p>Arguably, if Masimo claims that Apple has violated its rights in the development of its pulse oximetry tech, updates to software built to support that supposedly stolen tech may, itself, draw fire from Masimo and interested parties.</p><p>Certainly I&#8217;m no lawyer, and I don&#8217;t play one on TV, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out.</p><h2>Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad&nbsp;updates</h2><p>In 2023, Apple surprised many of us by finally bringing two of its main professional applications to its tablet lineup. It&#8217;s now possible to film, edit, and produce the music for a video directly on an iPad using the tools many creative professionals have come to know and have loved for years.</p><div that in 2024, we&#8217;ll see continued development of these apps, working to bring better feature parity between the iPad apps and their Mac counterparts.</p><p>While I suspect it will be virtually impossible for the iPad and Mac versions of each program to reach complete feature parity, the fact that Logic and Final Cut even work on a tablet is astounding all on its own in my book.</p><p>Especially since these are subscription apps, my hope is that Apple will continue to work on, improve and add to each program to make them as fully featured and powerful as they reasonably can be considering the form factor.</p><h2>What are you looking forward to most?</h2><p>As usual, there are plenty of rumors about each of these coming releases, and it will be interesting to see just what we get this year. Will we see major overhauls to the operating systems we know and love? Or will we see relatively small, iterative upgrades? We&#8217;ll see soon enough.</p><p>But I&#8217;d love to know what software you&#8217;re most looking forward to from Cupertino this year. </p><p>Let me know in the comments.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://spareroomtech.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading Spare Room Tech!
